How to Build Domain Authority for your Website

There is no simple 1 click solution to building domain authority for your website, however there are plenty of 1 click ways to ruin it, if your serious about building up the authority and trust of your domain in order to rank better on google then there is only one road to take and trust me, it’s the hard road that gives you the results.

What is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority is a value attached to a domain name which represents it’s authority or trust as a source on the internet, very few websites have 100% domain authority and the list of DA100 sites is pretty much reserved for the likes of Facebook, Google, The BBC, etc, etc.

A good reasonable DA rating for a normal in use website would be somewhere in the region of 25 or 30+ certainly this would be the level you would look to be achieving for your website in the first year.

Are All Domains Born Equal?

The simple answer here is ‘No’ all domains are not born equally, if you happen to buy a domain name for your website that has been used previously and then released back to the registrar, then there is every chance that the domain will already have a level of domain authority, however there is also a chance that the domain will have toxic or spammy links attached to it, or even be de-listed by google, so previously registered domains whilst they can be a good way to get instant domain authority for your new website are not always the answer you may be looking for.

How to Build Domain Authority.

Domain authority is built up by encouraging back links to your website from other relevant and high quality websites. This is not as easy as it sounds, there are a number of websites, you can add your link too which will get the likes of Google and other search engines initially interested in your website, but after that you need the cooperation of other website that have content relevant to your own to link to pages within your website in order to pass on a little of their authority to your own site.

Domain Authority and Page Authority are different things, but are similarly influenced, in that Page Authority (PA) is the authority level of a single page within your website and the Domain Authority (DA) is the overall authority or your entire domain.

What is Trust and How Do I Get It?

Trust and Authority flow from page to page across the internet via links, it is often referred to as LinkJuice, when a page on the internet links to another page then the Page Authority, Domain Authority and other factors about that page and of course the domain under which it resides are used by Google and other search engines to add information it knows about the current page to the one’s that it links too, and also vice-versa, what is known about the pages you link to can also travel back up those links to add information to the page doing the linking, this way search engines can gain knowledge as to the relevance of a page in reference to other sites around it and connected to it.

With the above in mind, one sure fire way to increase your own domain authority is to have higher ranking websites linking into yours. Now of course it would be great if we could all just ask the BBC for a link and that was that, but it isn’t and of course even if we could they probably wouldn’t, unless of course we were news worthy.

In the bad old days of black hat SEO and spam, blog comments and forums were often a standard source of back links, and most forums and blogs would be inundated with spam comments and threads from so called SEO professionals building back links to sites they were working on, this practice has been brought to an end by the release of Googles Penguin update which seeks out internet spam and penalises anyone website that uses it.

The only way to get real trust on the Internet and therefore build your domain authority is by publishing high quality content that other internet site owners will want to link to from other relevant sites and pages. These are the only types of links that you really want coming into your site, and the only type that will guarantee you a lift in your DA.

Spam & Toxic Links

There has been a lot of talk in SEO land recently over Spam &  Toxic links with google adding, in 2012 Google introduced an update to their search algorithm code named Google Penguin whilst the name is friendly enough the results of Google’s Penguin update was devastating to websites that had been using Black Hat or Spammy techniques to try and artificially manipulate their sites rankings by creating masses of back links, often from low quality spammy websites (see Google’s Panda update for more information on how low quality sites are ranked and detected).

The end result of the Google Penguin update was that just throwing loads of back links around no longer worked, those of us who had practiced 100% white hat SEO methods in the past and had built back links via high quality content, were pretty much untouched by the update, however if you had previously or were involved in Black Hat SEO methods and had spammy links pointing to your website, then you were in serious trouble, with websites being penalised or even completely delisted by Google in the most extreme circumstances.

If you do have spam or toxic links pointing at you website then you need to clean up your act, and your practices, spam or toxic back links will blacken your name and lower your domain authority thus pushing anything and everything you publish via your website further down the rankings in google than it would normally naturally appear.

If you are serious about increasing your domain authority then a full audit of all backlinks should be performed on a regular basis, and any that are considered to be spam should be dealt with as soon as possible.

Removing Toxic or Spam Back Links

Your first port of call to get toxic back links removed is to contact the website on which the link exists and ask them to remove it, where possible this is always the best course of action and should always be your first choice for dealing with toxic back links.

Disavowing Toxic Links

If you have tried getting any spam or toxic back links to your website removed manually and are not getting anywhere then there is another way.

Google provides a tool know as the Google Disavow Tool to disavow toxic back links , and request that google remove their association from your website, this tool is ideal if you have a large number of spammy links to block, however it should not be viewed as a total solution, it is still better in the long term to get the links removed at the source.

There Is No Quick Way To Build Back Links!

In addition it is also good practice to ensure that the alt text and or link text of all back links is unique authority and trust is passed with relevance from site to site, so the authority or LinkJuice that is passed from one website to another is passed down not only with relevance attached as too the primary keywords of the website that the link came from but always with relevance of the link text or alt text that the link directly relates too. And remember if you have lots of links all with the same link text or alt text then there is every chance that Google will see them as spam.

For The Love Of God, Do Not Buy Links!!!!!!

Buying back links is probably the worst thing you can possibly do if you are looking to build domain authority, Google is exceptionally good at spotting paid links, and there is avery chance that these links will be classed as spam. if you do pay for advertising on any websites then make sure that all links contain a ‘nofollow’ tag (see below) so that Google will discount them.

Please remember though that the ‘nofollow’ tag on links is not a 100% guarantee that Google will not use it in some way within Penguin.

Building Links and Authority Using Content

The No 1 way to build high quality back links is through high quality content, content that people and websites will want to link to, content that people and websites will feel is relevant and important and that they will want to link too, these kind of natural links are what Google and other search engines are looking for.

Links that are built naturally using high quality content are generally from relevant websites and pages, because of the very nature of these links they will generally come from other high quality pages, with content that is relevant to your own, therefore they will naturally carry the link relevance that you are looking for.

This does not mean that you wont need to promote your content in order to get these links, because very little in internet land comes for free these days, but the job will be made a whole lot easier if the content and pages you are trying to get people to link too are high quality and relevant to them.

The Power of Social Media in Link Building

Social Media allows you to share and promote your pages to thousands if not millions of people, it allows you to target certain demographics and interest groups via paid advertising etc, which makes it perfect for targeting people with your content, and if you can get your content in front of the right people, and it’s high quality and relevant then there is a good chance it will be shared.

Whilst Google currently say they do not use social media within their algorithm, there is strong evidence that sharing metrics on social media, and links etc are referenced even if only in a small way by search engine algorithms.
